About the Walk
This walking challenge offers the opportunity to enjoy approximately 40 hours’ walking in this incredibly beautiful country. Participants will walk for 5/6 hours on each day, enjoying a variety of walks of varying lengths and difficulty.
Two walking groups per day will offer a variety of distance and difficulty for all levels of walkers. The minimum required walking is 15k (10miles) per day depending on the terrain, after that all you need is a good pair of boots, plenty of enthusiasm and a great sense of adventure!
Itinerary
This challenge is one that lets you into the real essence of Cambodia. We trek to TonleSap lake, the life blood of Cambodia, and then spend 4 days trekking through Khmer villages and ancient historical sites of the greater Angkor region. We will get to discover the bustling capital Phnom Penh before finishing up in the Cambodian coast and the deserted beaches around Sihanoukville where we will get the opportunity to relax after 8 days of hard work and great walking!
On this advernture, we will witness life untouched by modernisation, where the warmth and friendliness of the Cambodian people leaves us with perhaps our greatest memories on this challenge.
Please email tcomber@irishheart.ie for a more detailed itinerary.
Why Join our Walk?
The Foundation’s overseas walks are an essential source of charity income, raising over €200,000 annually. This year all money raised for the overseas walk will go directly towards our Stroke Campaign which aims to eliminate avoidable death and disability from stroke in Ireland.
In 2009 we launched the Stroke Manifesto – a 16 point plan to eliminate avoidable death and disability from stroke – the national charity fighting stroke and heart disease emphasised that:
- Less than one third of acute hospitals have a stroke unit – despite the fact that a national network of these units could save up to 500 lives a year.
- At least 15% of strokes in Ireland are misdiagnosed – over 1,500 cases every year.
- Less than 3% of acute stroke patients received the lifesaving clot buster treatment in the year to April 2009 – just 178 people.
- HSE statistics indicate that up to seven times more patients could receive thrombolysis with improved services.
Your Fundraising will help Fund our Plans for 2010
- Lobbying Oireachtas to carry out actions listed in Stroke Manifesto
- Help establish national network of Stroke Support Groups
- Develop high quality and comprehensive information for stroke patients and their families
- Launch stroke website ( www.stroke.ie )
- Continue work of Strok Helpline ( 1890 432 787)
- Launch a 'life after Stroke' awards to recognise the courage of stroke survivors and hard work and commitment of carers
- Launch Stroke magazine to help connect people affected by stroke
Why Walking?
Apart from being a brilliant way to see a country, medical evidence suggests that a regular routine of ‘brisk’ walking is the safest, most beneficial and most accessible preventative measure against coronary heart disease.
Our Experience...
The Irish Heart Foundation has 20 years’ experience in organising overseas sponsored walks in North & South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. In the past, successful walks have taken place in China, Jordan, South Africa, Argentina, Russia and most recently in India Sumatra and Costa Rica.
Fundraising
Prior to departure, each participant must raise a minimum of €5,095. We will assist in every way possible, offering a wealth of fundraising ideas and backup support.
From this fundraising, €3,000 goes directly back to the Irish Heart Foundation as your fundraising contribution.
The target of €5095 may be daunting at first glance, but with thought and determination it is not such a difficult figure to raise, as our hundreds of walkers have found over the years. The Irish Heart Foundation has a team of experienced fundraisers all over the country ready and willing to help with a plan of action based on your own interests and contacts, and a list of fundraising ideas to work from.
We will also help with posters, permits, publicity, sponsorship cards and special Over
seas Walk raffle tickets. Why not ask us or our comprehensive list of fundraising ideas,…the list is endless?
SO GO ON…PUT YOUR HEART INTO IT!
