Cardiomyopathy Support group

The Irish Cardiomyopathy Support Group was set up in 1999 in association with the Irish Heart Foundation. The purpose of the support group is to create an awareness of the condition and to support people affected by it.

The Irish support group consists of patients and their families. However, in recent times we are glad to include in our membership medical personnel who have an interest in the condition because of their contact with patients in clinics, hospitals or other medical settings. In all we have about 300 members from all over Ireland.

One message we are constantly promoting is that all first degree relatives of affected people should be screened for the condition because of the genetic nature of cardiomyopathy. Like all support groups we give and receive support from one another and we welcome new members.

What is cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy is a medical term to explain that there is a heart (cardio) muscle (myo) disorder or problem (pathy)

There are four types of cardiomyopathy:
•Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)
•Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
•Restrictive Cardiomyopathy (RCM)
•Arrythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC)
