Sudden Cardiac Death in the Young Support Group

This group was set up in 2006 by parents who have all suffered the loss of a child, recognising the need for:

  • Contact with other parents or partners or siblings who have been bereaved through Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD).
  • More information about Sudden Cardiac Death
  • Contact with Counsellors nationwide
  • Raising awareness of SCD & the warning signs of potentially life-threatening heart conditions

Mission:
It is this group’s mission to support affected families and to affect change so that others may live.

Reducing the Risk: A Strategic Approach
(Report of the Task Force on Sudden Cardiac Death) http://www.dohc.ie/publications/sudden_cardiac_death.html

The Group wishes to assist and support the implementation of the Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) Taskforce recommendations.

Particular points of these recommendations are very important to us.
Awareness:

  • Increased public awareness of Sudden Cardiac Death In The Young.
  • Education of Family Practitioners in Sudden Cardiac Death.

Screening:

  • Timely and appropriate referral of affected families to medical experts.
  • Screening centres for affected families (SCD is a family problem, not an individual problem).
  • Identifying at risk individuals and families and the introduction of pre-participation sport questionnaires in schools and sports clubs.

(AEDs) Automatic External Defibrillators:
Create HeartSafe communities and encourage extensive AED placements and training of inidividuals in CPR and the use of AEDs.
